Image
NOTE 1:  ROTATE OFF LEASH PRACTICE WITH ON LEASH PRACTICE.  ALWAYS USE THE LEASH IF YOU START HAVING TROUBLE WITH YOUR OFF LEASH PRACTICE. NOTE 2:   DO NOT LEAVE METAL TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG. NOTE 3:  PLEASE PUT ON YOUR METAL TRAINING COLLAR CORRECTLY.  ALSO BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY. This is a link to a leash article on our business blog.  Leashes How to Hold Them and How to Fold Them . NOTE 4:  START EVERYTHING AT THE BEGINNING IN ENVIRONMENTS AND WITH EQUIPMENT THAT ARE EASY FOR YOU.   YOU WANT TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT YOUR DOG HAS LEARNED AND HOW TO HANDLE YOUR DOG IN LOW DISTRACTIONS FIRST, SO THAT YOU WILL BEGIN TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN MORE COMPLICATED OR HIGHER DISTRACTIONS LATER. NOTE 5:   THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE.  IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL.  PLEASE REME...

Week 2 and 3 Housebreaking Notes and Protocols

Notes:  On week 1, we had no accidents or issues with house training.  Week 2, there ended up being a time between 10am and 12pm that poop accidents would happen for a few days.  So I have been very on my toes during those times. Then on Week 3, we were back to no accidents again. I know you have a doggie door, but you might want to escort him there during the times I will list and make sure he stays out there for 5 minutes (10 minutes if he is having an issue suddenly).  You will need to block the doggie door some way to make this happen.  I think what is happening at home is he is wanting to get back in with you.   Therefore, he does not take the time to be sure everything is done outside. Protocols: I have an article on some of the things we do.   I will post the link below.  Deeks was not too complicated though so you probably will only need to do a couple of things different. Housetraining article link Here are the times Deek...

Week 2 and 3 Sit With Correction

The goal for this week will be to do four in a row without needing the correction (which means it is very important to use the well timed correction when it is needed).   You will want to do this (with the heeling) for a half an hour a day. THIS IS SOMETHING YOU CAN ONLY CORRECT WITH THE COLLAR WHEN YOUR DOG IS ON LEASH.  ALSO DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE HEELING. STEP 1 :  Heel with your dog, but be sure that your dog is in good heel position before preparing for the sit command.. STEP 2:    When ready say "sit" as you plant your left foot (while standing you will also close this up with your right foot, but you want to say sit while your dog is in good heel position to catch them as soon as possible---they will later learn to read this body language to create an auto sit).     Also keep your leash loose like a J next to the dog's neck when you say sit (no tension in the leash.   remember tension is only in times of corr...

Week 2 and 3 Sit Stay for Leash On and Off

Equipment Needed:   Collar , Leash ,  Food Reward  Purpose and Explanation of Exercise:   This is to get your skittish or escaping dog used to working close up and used to getting the leash on and off instead of running away.  This also makes a regular habit of you going up to him and taking the leash on and off thereby starting a pattern and eventually a regular habit. STEP 1:   Put your dog in the "sit" command.  Your dog is to stay sitting (that way you are also practicing a stay command with distractions as well). STEP 2:   Bend down to put on the leash.   STEP 3A:  If your dog  stays there and waits for you to put on the leash, use the marker word "good boy/girl" (means good job and keep going). STEP 3 B:   If he gets out of his sit, you can use the following strategies to continue: Use the (that is not what I am looking for marker word "No").  Then if your dog sits and lets you put on the leash use marker...

Week 1 Videos of Work

Commands and Exercises Worked on (underlined words in blue go to directions): Calming Exercises: Sit on the Dog is helps your dog not only learn how to chill but also to learn to be near you not running away.   That is the other half of having a dog that will come on command instead of running away.  This is just one thing that is being worked on.  This is purely a behavioral exercise as no commands come with it. Long Place is both a behavioral and training exercise.  This also promotes impulse control. Obedience Exercises: Still Sit Stay  helps your dog learn to stay still while you, eventually, move around him.  This is also the other side of your dog not running away from you. Circle Sit Stay is where you get your dog used to you walking closely and eventually from a distance around them. Intro to Place is the first step to where we start when teaching the long place.  This just introduces them to their first or their new place obj...

THIS MATERIAL MUST NOT BE DISTRIBUTED TO OTHER NON-CLIENT PARTIES OF MANNERLY MUTTS WITHOUT EXPRESS PERMISSION. NOTE ON STAYS:   DO NOT RUSH THROUGH THIS EXERCISE.   IF YOU STOP AT ONE SECTION, BUT DO THE BEST WORK POSSIBLE THAT IS MOST IMPORTANT.   IF YOU CAME HERE MORE ADVANCED, BUT HAVE TROUBLE AT ONE LEVEL, THEN BACK DOWN TO THE PREVIOUS LEVEL, AND GET THAT DONE CORRECTLY BEFORE MOVING ON.   CORRECTLY GOING ON MEANS THAT THE DOG CAN PERFORM THE TASK WITHOUT TREAT OR CORRECTION FOUR OUT OF FIVE TIMES. Equipment Needed: 6' Leash (to begin with) Training Collar (martingale, metal chain collar, or prong collar) 15' Leash (after four out of five stays while on the move with distractions can be accomplished at more than a 6' distance WITH distractions present) Explanation and Goal of Exercise:...

Week 1 Long Place

Explanation and Goal:  This teaches your dog that you might very well be in a seated position when they are in a place (while the third step has started the idea that you may be moving around the room).  This is tricky for dogs as they usually want to be petted or cuddled when you take a seat, but it is important that owners have time to read, work, eat a meal, and so on without constantly needing to pay attention to their dog.  Usually this is eventually used for a half hour or an hour. It is like a crate without walls. It allows your dog to feel more included, but they are responsible for staying there until released. This command is valuable when you need to move them out of the way to do chores and/or you have company over.  Long place is technically the 4th step in teaching the place command:    First step is intro. Intro is just walking the dog and letting them pass over it. "Place" is said when all paws are on the p...
